The Bull Inn public house, a Grade 2 listed building dating back to the 16th century, has been purchased by the Co-op and converted into a new, state of the art convenience store, with short term parking at the rear.
Open from 7am to 10pm each day the new Co-op convenience store offers a wide range of daily fresh produce and branded products, including own brand Co-op Fair Trade tea, coffee, sugar and chocolate, plus a bakery, fresh coffee and newspapers. The store has a staff of 15, 80% of whom live locally.
The Bull Inn was previously a public house owned by McMullen’s Brewery of Hertford, but closed down in 2015 before being purchased by the Co-op in 2017. Planning consent for the conversion of this important Grade 2 listed building was finally given by St. Albans District Council in late 2020 and the new store opened at the end of September 2021.
During the 18th century the Bull Inn was a main stopping point for Royal Mail coaches and their fares travelling north out of London and at one time had stabling for up to 80 horses, 13 bedrooms, and a dining room.
